Oregon Mutual was founded in Oregon in 1894. Today, the company offers auto, home and business insurance in California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. It is one of the oldest mutual insurance providers in the U.S. and sells auto and home insurance policies through independent agents. To help you decide if Oregon Mutual may be a good fit for your situation, it may be valuable to review the provider’s perks and drawbacks mentioned in our Oregon Mutual insurance review.

Oregon Mutual writes policies in California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. It is unique in that it’s a mutual company, which means policyholders own the company and may have the ability to earn dividends. The company, after nearly 130 years serving the Pacific Northwest, has demonstrated an understanding of their policyholders and an ability to serve their needs. The company maintains low average premiums and engages in community outreach programs.

Oregon Mutual car insurance

If you’re looking for a local provider with competitive rates, Oregon Mutual auto insurance may be worth a quote. The company offers low average rates, several discounts, a wide range of car insurance coverage options and currently has no complaints with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), all of which contribute to the company’s high Bankrate Score. It also boasts an A- (Excellent) rating for financial strength from AM Best. However, Oregon Mutual is unrated by J.D. Power and Standard & Poor’s (S&P), likely due to it being a smaller regional carrier.

Other Oregon Mutual perks worth considering

Outside of home and auto insurance, Oregon Mutual also offers business insurance and a couple of unique insurance products and options:

  • Winery coverage: Oregon Mutual serves the Pacific Northwest’s many vineyards by offering winery insurance. Options are available to cover blending errors and omissions, branding and labeling, wine transit, display booths, grape vines, trellises, unexpected wine oxidation and much more.
  • Farm coverage: Oregon Mutual offers a unique mix of farm-centric coverage types including bee board coverage, equine care coverage and disruption of farming operations. The company also offers endorsements to cover orchards and vineyards.
  • Business coverage: If you run an office, restaurant, manufacturing company or another business, Oregon Mutual offers coverage options to help you protect your finances.
  • Quick pay option: Without logging into your account, you can quickly pay your premium by inputting your account or policy number, billing ZIP code and card information via a designated page on Oregon Mutual’s website. While the mobile app may have room for improvement, the quick pay option may appeal to those looking for a convenient payment option.

Oregon Mutual corporate sustainability

Oregon Mutual insurance doesn’t disclose any community outreach or corporate sustainability programs on its website. However, the company emphasizes the importance of being a mutual company, wherein the policyholders own the company. The website emphasizes that “Oregon Mutual does not answer to institutional investors,” indicating that the company likely has a stronger customer-focused approach.

Not sure if Oregon Mutual is right for you? Consider these alternatives

Oregon Mutual insurance won’t necessarily be the best option for everyone. If it isn’t quite right for your needs, you may want to consider a provider from the list of carriers below:

  • State Farm: State Farm is one of the best home insurance companies and one of the best car insurance companies on the market, according to the 2022 Bankrate Awards. The company won these awards for its near-nationwide availability, extensive network of agents, affordable coverage and high customer satisfaction score, among other positive attributes.
  • Geico: Geico is widely regarded for its diverse range of discounts, low average premiums and nationwide availability. If you’re looking for affordable coverage, but Oregon Mutual doesn’t write policies in your state, you may want to look into Geico.
  • USAA: USAA writes policies for members of the U.S. military, veterans and qualifying family members. If you qualify, USAA may be a great choice. The company consistently receives top scores for customer satisfaction from J.D. Power and has some of the lowest average rates on the market.

Methodology

Bankrate utilizes Quadrant Information Services to analyze 2021 rates for all ZIP codes and carriers in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quoted rates are based on 40-year-old male and female homeowners with a clean claim history, good credit and the following coverage limits:

Auto

  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $50,000 property damage liability per accident
  • $100,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per person
  • $300,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per accident
  • $500 collision deductible
  • $500 comprehensive deductible

To determine minimum coverage limits, Bankrate used minimum coverage that meets each state’s requirements. Our sample drivers own a 2019 Toyota Camry, commute five days a week and drive 12,000 miles annually.

Age: Rates were calculated by evaluating our base profile with the ages 18-60 (base: 40 years) applied. Depending on age, drivers may be a renter or homeowner. Age is not a contributing rating factor in Hawaii and Massachusetts.

Incidents: Rates were calculated by evaluating our base profile with the following incidents applied: clean record (base), single speeding ticket and single at-fault accident.

Homeowners

  • Coverage A, Dwelling: $150,000, $250,000, $350,000, $450,000
  • Coverage B, Other Structures: $15,000, $25,000, $35,000, $45,000
  • Coverage C, Personal Property: $75,000, $125,000, $175,000, $225,000
  • Coverage D, Loss of Use: $30,000, $50,000, $70,000, $90,000
  • Coverage E, Liability: $300,000
  • Coverage F, Medical Payments: $1,000

The homeowners also have a $1,000 deductible and a separate wind and hail deductible (if required).

These are sample rates and should be used for comparative purposes only. Your quotes will differ.

Bankrate Scores

Bankrate Scores primarily reflect a weighted rank of industry-standard ratings for financial strength and customer experience in addition to analysis of quoted annual premiums from Quadrant Information Services, spanning all 50 states and Washington, D.C. We know it is important for drivers and homeowners to be confident their financial protection covers the likeliest risks, is priced competitively and is provided by a financially-sound company with a history of positive customer support.

To determine how well the best car and home insurance companies satisfy these priorities, third-party agency ratings from J.D. Power, AM Best, S&P, NAIC, and Moody’s had the most impact on the companies’ Bankrate Scores. As price is a common consideration for drivers and homeowners, we analyzed quoted premiums based on 40-year-old male and female drivers with a 2019 Toyota Camry, as well as 40-year-old male and female homeowners with $250,000 in dwelling coverage. This profile, assessed across more than 35,000 ZIP codes in the U.S., provided a basis on which drivers and homeowners may compare each provider.

While coverage options, insurer availability, affordability and customer experience are often the top priorities, Bankrate also analyzed each insurer’s online and mobile resources for policy management and claims handling. Insurance is rapidly evolving to keep pace with our digital world, so these aspects also carried weight in determining Bankrate Scores.
