Bankrate’s take: Gender is factored into car insurance rates in most states, including New Hampshire — although some states ban this practice. As mentioned, men tend to experience slightly higher average premiums due to their risk profile. No matter your gender, keeping a clean driving record, taking advantage of discounts and enrolling in a telematics program may help lower your rate.

Cost considerations for young drivers in New Hampshire

Drivers under 18 cannot take out their own car insurance policies; they must be added to an adult’s. But even when a young driver can get their own insurance, it’s typically far more expensive than if they remain on their parents’ policy. The table below compares rates between young drivers on their parents’ policy and those on their own.

How does driving record impact the cost of car insurance in New Hampshire?

When you apply for car insurance, the insurer looks at your driving record to determine your level of risk. Drivers with a history of violations usually pay the highest rates. Keep in mind that not all providers will extend coverage to high-risk drivers —particularly those with a DUI conviction — so it’s important to shop around and speak to a licensed agent to figure out your options. After you incur certain infractions, usually after your license is suspended for a period of time, you may have to file an SR-22 form to reinstate your license. This form tells the state that your coverage meets the legally required minimums.

Car insurance rates in New Hampshire by credit tier

Creditworthiness is factored into premiums by car insurance companies in most states, including New Hampshire. Credit standing has a statistical correlation to claims filing according to actuarial data, whereby drivers with lower credit scores are more likely to file a claim. Insurers often consider credit-based insurance scores in their rating algorithms, leading to higher rates for drivers in lower credit tiers. New Hampshire drivers with poor credit pay more than twice as much for full coverage, on average, as drivers with good credit.

How to save on car insurance in New Hampshire

Drivers who are looking for the cheapest car insurance in New Hampshire can benefit from shopping around and comparing quotes from multiple providers. But there are other strategies to help save money on your policy, too. Here are some suggestions:

  • Look for discounts: Most car insurance companies offer discounts that can help drivers get a lower premium. Typical discounts include savings for being a good student, remaining claims-free and having certain safety equipment in your vehicle.
  • Improve your credit: Drivers with poor credit pay higher car insurance rates on average due to their heightened risk level. Raising your credit score can help you get a lower premium.
  • Raise your deductible: Raising your deductible can reduce your premium, but it also means taking on more financial responsibility in the event of a covered incident (like an accident you cause, vehicle theft, vandalism or weather-related damage, among other situations). So, before increasing your deductible, make sure you’re comfortable paying more out of pocket should you need to file a claim.
  • Pay your premium in full: Drivers who can afford to pay their annual insurance premium up front and in full, rather than in monthly installments, often qualify for a lower rate.

Methodology

Bankrate utilizes Quadrant Information Services to analyze the latest rates in February 2024 for ZIP codes and carriers in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Rates include the most recent approved rate changes filed by insurance companies that affect our profile. These revised rates are then weighted based on the population density in each geographic region so that policyholders can see the impact rates have in their areas. Quoted rates are based on a 40-year-old male and female driver with a clean driving record, good credit and the following full coverage limits:

  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $50,000 property damage liability per accident
  • $100,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per person
  • $300,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per accident
  • $500 collision deductible
  • $500 comprehensive deductible

To determine minimum coverage limits, Bankrate used minimum coverage that meets each state’s requirements. Our base profile drivers own a 2022 Toyota Camry, commute five days a week and drive 12,000 miles annually.

These are sample rates and should only be used for comparative purposes.

Credit-based insurance scores: Rates were calculated based on the following insurance credit tiers assigned to our drivers: “poor, average, good (base) and excellent.” Insurance credit tiers factor in your official credit scores but are not dependent on that variable alone. Four states prohibit or limit the use of credit as a rating factor in determining auto insurance rates: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Michigan.

Incidents: Rates were calculated by evaluating our base profile with the following incidents applied: clean record (base), at-fault accident, single speeding ticket and single DUI conviction.

Model: To determine cost by vehicle type, we evaluated our base profile with the following vehicles applied: BMW 330i, Ford F-150, Honda Odyssey, Toyota Prius and Toyota Camry (base).

Age: Rates were calculated by evaluating our base profile with the ages 16-70 (base: 40 years) applied. Depending on age, drivers may be a renter or homeowner. Age is not a contributing rating factor in Hawaii and Massachusetts due to state regulations.

Gender: The following states do not use gender as a determining factor in calculating premiums: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania.

Teens: Rates were determined by adding a 16- or 17-year-old teen to their 40-year-old married parents' policy. The rates displayed reflect the total cost of a driver this age added to their parents’ policy unless otherwise noted.
