The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 5.1% in August, a 7-year low, as the economy added 173,000 jobs. The rate has now fallen to nearly half of its recession peak of 10% in October 2009.

The improvement has been uneven across the country, however. Here, in ascending order, are states with the highest unemployment rates in the country, according to the latest government estimates.
