Dear Insurance Adviser,
My daughter has brain cancer. She has had it for five years and is under treatment. She gets very shaky when she walks. I was told that I should get accident insurance for her. What do you think?
First, I’m so sorry to hear about your daughter. That must be incredibly hard.
No, I don’t recommend that you buy some kind of accident insurance policy for her. Health insurance in this country covers medical bills from illness and accidents. Under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, there are no lifetime maximum limits anymore. There’s no reason I can see to supplement her health insurance with an accident-only policy.
If there is something about your daughter’s health insurance that you don’t like (for example, if her deductible is too high), keep in mind that open enrollment for 2015 coverage under Obamacare will be available for her in your state’s health exchange starting Nov. 15.
All the best to both of you.
