Fame & Fortune Q&A:
Bankrate: Are you a risk taker when it comes to investing?
Ed Viesturs: I’m very conservative. I look at my house, which I’m still paying for, as an investment. Then I have some other funds that I have with a guy that carefully and securely puts it in places that I’m comfortable with. I have my own retirement account as well. As a self-employed person, I have to think that I won’t be able to do this forever and I need to set up retirement, I need to set up accounts for my kids to go to school. That’s stuff that I have to do on my own. Health insurance, the whole deal. A lot of people, when they work for companies, that’s all kind of taken care of for them; money is taken out on its own, you have a retirement account, health insurance. I have to think about that and set it up for myself. I have to plan ahead.

Lesson learned:
The self-employed must plan ahead and take care of all of their own finances.
