Are you looking for a free rewards program that can help you earn frequent flyer miles even when you aren’t in the air? The Delta SkyMiles Dining program works with the SkyMiles frequent flyer program to let customers at participating restaurants rake in the rewards.

How does SkyMiles Dining work?

Once you’re a member of the SkyMiles program, you can increase your earnings through several partner programs. Delta SkyMiles Dining is one of the easiest to use, with more than 10,000 participating bars and restaurants across the United States.

First, choose a debit or credit card to link to your SkyMiles account. Then, when you eat out at a participating restaurant, pay with that card to earn points.

Where can I find participating restaurants?

Visit the Delta SkyMiles Dining site and type in a ZIP Code, or a city and state in the search bar near the top of the screen. If you’re looking for a specific type of cuisine, such as Italian or Chinese, enter that into the second search bar.

You can filter your options based on prices or types of meals served — breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner or late-night dining. You can also choose “new” to see what restaurants may have been added since your last site visit.

Find restaurant reviews and access menus through the SkyMiles Dining site to make your decision about where to eat a little easier.

How many miles can I earn with SkyMiles Dining?

It’s nice to earn frequent flyer miles without having to book a pricey trip. But just how much can you earn with Delta SkyMiles Dining? The answer depends on your membership level.

Regular members earn 1 mile for every $2 spent. Online members earn 3 miles for every dollar, or six times as much as a regular member. To achieve this status, just opt into receiving SkyMiles Dining emails when you sign up.

Finally, to achieve coveted VIP status and earn 5 miles for every dollar spent, opt into emails and complete 11 qualified restaurant visits in a calendar year. In addition to extra points, VIP status unlocks even more participating restaurants and unlocks access to a VIP Member Services line.

Just like other SkyMiles rewards, SkyMiles Dining points do not expire and there are no blackout dates on Delta flights.

However, it’s important to note that points earned through Delta SkyMiles Dining do not count toward Medallion status.

How to maximize miles with SkyMiles Dining

One of the best ways to maximize your miles is to dine out at a participating restaurant and spend at least $30 using your linked card 11 times each calendar year. That will get you the maximum 5X rewards points.

But if you join now, you can also earn a generous sign-up bonus. And, unlike some sign-up bonuses, the rewards aren’t all-or-nothing.

  • Earn 500 Bonus Miles when you spend $30 or more at a participating restaurant within the first 30 days and submit an online review with 30 days of your restaurant visit.
  • On your second restaurant visit and review combination, you’ll earn another 1,000 points.
  • The third visit/review earns 1,500 points, for a total of 3,000. (SkyMiles Medallion Members get 1,000 miles for the first visit, raising the total to 3,500.)

If you love dining out and sharing your thoughts about your favorite restaurants with others, this program rewards you for doing so.

How to redeem points

Even if you don’t fly often, you can earn SkyMiles to redeem for that once-in-a-lifetime trip. You can also use your miles to rent a car, book a hotel stay, or shop for merchandise in the SkyMiles Marketplace.

Looking for the perfect gift? Share your points with a friend or family member, give your points as a gift or buy an airline ticket for someone else using your miles. You can also purchase a Delta gift card or even donate your points to charity.

Redeem points for a Delta flight the same way you use any SkyMiles. Just book your travel online at the Delta website and choose “miles” instead of “money.”

You can also use your points to shop for top brands like Barneys New York or HP through the SkyMiles store.

Best credit cards to earn SkyMiles Dining points

SkyMiles Dining members have plenty of choices to earn more SkyMiles Dining points or ramp up their restaurant rewards in other ways.

Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card

If you want to earn SkyMiles even faster when you eat out, link your SkyMiles Dining account with a SkyMiles credit card that offers 2X miles for restaurant purchases worldwide. The Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card offers 2 miles per dollar at restaurants worldwide, 2 miles per dollar spent on purchases made directly with Delta and 1 mile per dollar on all other purchases.

Spend $500 within the first three months of card membership and earn 10,000 bonus miles. This seems to be a minimal reward for a travel credit card, but with no annual fee, the American Express Blue Delta SkyMiles card isn’t a bad starter rewards card. If you’re a frequent flyer, you may do better with other travel rewards cards.

Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card

If you dine out a lot, it’s worth considering a card outside the Delta family to rack up rewards. Connect your Capital One Savor Cash Rewards card to your SkyMiles Dining account. In addition to the 5X SkyMiles you can earn as a VIP member, you can earn 4% cash back for your restaurant purchase with the Savor card. Plus, earn 2% at the grocery store and 1% cash back on everything else with Savor.

This card offers a $300 cash bonus if you spend $3,000 within the first three months of account opening.

Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card

If you’re a frequent Delta flyer, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card is your best choice to link your SkyMiles Dining account. It offers 2X miles on purchases made directly with Delta (and 2x at restaurants worldwide and at U.S. supermarkets and 1X for every dollar on other purchases).

With a $99 annual fee waived the first year, it is also one of the more affordable SkyMiles rewards credit cards compared to the top-tier American Express Delta SkyMiles cards.

The Delta SkyMiles Gold card’s welcome bonus reaches new heights. Earn 50,000 Bonus Miles after spending $2,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months (offer ends 10/28/20).
