Citi is an advertising partner.
The no annual fee credit card is replacing the ThankYou Preferred Card in Citi’s lineup, offering 2x points at supermarkets and gas stations (on up to $6,000 in combined purchases annually) and 1x points on all other purchases.
That might seem like an underwhelming rewards structure, but your ThankYou points are rounded up to the nearest 10 on every purchase made with the card (meaning your $2 morning coffee fix, which would normally give you just 2 points, will earn you 10 points). This is a unique feature that no other card or issuer offers, helping you make the most out of those everyday small purchases.
Citi has also added an incentive for those who regularly redeem their rewards points. For the first 100,000 points redeemed per year, you can earn 10% points back. If you maximize this feature, you could earn an extra 10,000 ThankYou Points each year, which is worth around $170.
Other notable features to the card include:
- 15,000 ThankYou Points after spending $1,000 within the first three months (worth around $225 according to expert valuations)
- Access to presale tickets and VIP experiences through Citi Private Pass
- Trip Cancellation and Interruption Protection
- Worldwide Car Rental Insurance and Travel Accident Insurance
- Extended Warranty and 90 Day Return Protection
Unfortunately, not all ThankYou points offer the same value. The points earned with the Rewards+ Card are considered “basic” Citi ThankYou points, meaning rewards are only worth a flat one cent each when redeemed for travel through the Citi portal, gift cards or statement credits. There is also less flexibility in your travel redemption options.
If you already have the Citi Prestige (currently not accepting new applications) and/or the Citi Premier℠ Card, you’ll be able to use this card to really maximize your earning potential. The Rewards+ Card will help you earn more on everyday smaller purchases due to the round-up feature, and you’ll be able to pool your rewards with your other Citi accounts to give you some added benefits like transfer partner redemption.
In Citi’s press release announcing the card, Chris Fred, Citi’s Head of Proprietary Products, expressed his excitement for how this card could add value for U.S. consumers.
“We’re excited to introduce a new card that truly turns everyday purchases into something bigger,” he said. “The unique and simple rewards structure is a game changer in rewarding customers for day-to-day purchases with its exclusive points round up and points back offering.”
In the past, Citi has been known for offering higher rewards on non-essentials and entertainment purchases, but the Rewards+ Card marks a shift in their focus to everyday spending categories.
Whether you’re looking for a beginner card or a way to maximize your Citi ThankYou Rewards Program, this card could potentially be a great addition to your wallet. It’s unique features, straightforward rewards structure and lack of an annual fee will make earning rewards easy. Citi loyalists can also use the card to turn everyday purchases into hefty rewards.
