American Express launches limited-time welcome offers on several cards
American Express recently announced a variety of limited-time welcome offers for new cardmembers, with some already in effect and others launching Thursday. With these offers, new cardmembers can earn heightened welcome bonuses, collect additional cash back rewards on select purchases and earn on gas station and supermarket purchases.
Here’s a look at each welcome offer recently announced for select American Express credit cards:
Amex Gold Card and Platinum
New owners of the American Express® Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express can qualify to earn an exclusive welcome bonus by applying for either card on Resy.com. New Gold cardmembers can get 60,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $4,000 in the first six months of card membership, and new Platinum cardmembers can earn 75,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $5,000 in the first six months. Additionally, new Platinum cardmembers earn 10X Membership Rewards points at U.S. gas stations and U.S. supermarkets on their first $15,000 in combined spending.
Amex Blue Cash Everyday
New Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express cardmembers can earn $100 cash back after spending $1,000 within the first six months of card membership, as well as 20 percent back on Amazon purchases in the first six months of card membership (up to $200 in earnings).
Should you apply for an American Express credit card?
American Express is giving potential cardmembers more than a few reasons to apply with these new welcome offers. This is in addition to Amex’s recent expansion of its Uber partnership, which brings new Uber-specific perks to Gold, Platinum and American Express® Green Card members.
Which card is right for you?
As for whether the Amex Gold, Platinum or Blue Cash Everyday is the best for you, Ted Rossman, industry analyst at Bankrate, says it depends on what type of rewards you’re looking to earn—cash back or travel points.
“If it’s cash back, you should go with the Blue Cash Everyday (or Preferred),” Rossman says. “If you’re interested in travel, the Gold and Platinum offers are really compelling.”
Rossman suggests viewing your options through a long-term lens, rather than the length of each card’s welcome offer. And if you’re interested in the Gold or Platinum, in particular, note that the Gold is a great fit for foodies with its fixed restaurant and supermarket-focused rewards structure, and the Platinum card will better suit (typically) frequent travelers who yearn for lounge access and other luxury travel perks.
“If you have a high credit score, this is a great time to apply for any of these cards,” Rossman says. “You may need to wait a bit to redeem your Gold and Platinum rewards—since they’re best used for travel—so take that into consideration.”
