Kaiser Permanente maintains 35 medical centers, 431 medical offices and approximately 14,600 physicians across the nation.

With eight major regions, Kaiser Permanente is the largest not-for-profit health care plan in the U.S. It was originally comprised of health care programs specifically for shipyard, steel mill and construction workers. Seeing that many workers could not afford health care during the Great Depression, physician Dr. Sidney Garfield began treating construction workers on a prepayment system. The prepayment system required insurance companies to pay a fixed amount per day for each covered worker, giving workers the ability to receive health care while on the job.

When the U.S. entered World War II, Garfield’s services and prepayment system were required in the shipyards of the San Francisco Bay area. Garfield met Henry J. Kaiser during this time period and formed the Permanente Health Care Plan. Public enrollment for the health care plan began in 1945.The name was officially changed to Kaiser Permanente in 1952 and is now comprised of the Permanente Medical Groups and the not-for-profit Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals.
