Apply for a Southwest credit card before February 11 to be eligible for the Companion Pass bonus.
Southwest’s Companion Pass is one of the best benefits loyal travelers can receive. With the Companion Pass, travelers can choose one person to travel with them for free (not including taxes and airline fees) on every flight. This designated companion can be a spouse, a child, a parent or a friend — it’s up to you.
Previously, the Companion Pass was only issued to travelers who had either earned 110,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards® points or taken 100 one-way revenue flights in a calendar year. However, Southwest is currently offering the Companion Pass as part of its new cardholder bonus on the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card and the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card.
This is a limited time offer that ends on February 11, 2019.
How can new cardholders earn the Southwest Companion Pass bonus?
People who successfully apply for the Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card, the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card or the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card before February 11, 2019, can earn both the Companion Pass and 30,000 Rapid Rewards points after spending $4,000 in the first three months of card ownership.
This bonus is not eligible to current Southwest Rapid Rewards cardholders, nor is it eligible to anyone who has previously held a Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card and earned a new cardmember bonus within the last 24 months.
How long does the Companion Pass last?
People who earn the Companion Pass by earning 110,000 Rapid Rewards points or taking 100 one-way revenue flights in a calendar year are able to use their Companion Pass both during the year in which they receive it and for the entire subsequent calendar year. In other words, if you earn your Companion Pass in February 2019, it’ll be valid through December 2020.
However, people who earn the Companion Pass through Southwest’s limited-time new cardmember bonus will only be able to use their pass through December 31, 2019. They do not get the benefit of an additional calendar year with the Companion Pass.
Which credit cards earn the Southwest Companion Pass bonus?
The following credit cards offer the Southwest Companion Pass bonus:
Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card: Designed for everyday travelers, this card comes with a $69 annual fee and earns 2 Rapid Rewards points per dollar on Southwest purchases and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. Plus, you’ll get an additional 3,000 bonus points on your cardmember anniversary.
Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card: Travelers who want to earn Rapid Rewards points more quickly and don’t mind a $99 annual fee can take advantage of this card’s perks. In addition to the 2 points per dollar on Southwest purchases and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases, cardholders get 6,000 bonus points on their cardmember anniversary. They also earn 1,500 Tier Qualifying points for each $10,000 in purchases (up to $100,000 in purchases annually) which can help them qualify for Rapid Rewards A-List or A-List Preferred status.
Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card: This one’s for serious travelers and comes with a $149 annual fee. You’ll earn Rapid Rewards points and Tier Qualifying points at the same rate as the Premier card, and you’ll get a hefty 7,500 bonus points on your cardmember anniversary. Additional benefits include a $75 annual Southwest travel credit, four upgraded boardings per year (when available), and 20% back on in-flight drinks and Wi-Fi.
Can cardholders still earn the Companion Pass without the new cardmember bonus?
The Companion Pass is still eligible to cardholders who earn 110,000 Rapid Rewards points or take 100 one-way revenue flights in a calendar year. If you are a current Southwest credit card holder who is not eligible for the new Companion Pass bonus, you can still get your Companion Pass the old-fashioned way. Likewise, if you apply for a Southwest credit card but fail to earn the new cardmember bonus, there are still ways for you to earn the Companion Pass.
