Chase and Marriott have recently announced an update to the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card as part of the new-and-improved travel loyalty brand, Marriott Bonvoy™. Launching February 13, the loyalty brand will combine Marriott Rewards®, The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® and Starwood Preferred Guest® (SPG®).
What is Marriott Bonvoy?
Marriott Bonvoy is the name given to the Marriott International and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide merger of August 2018. The unification sparked anxiety for some concerning whether or not SPG’s already top-tier rewards redemption rates would lose value. Unfortunately, they did – yet what also occurred was a simplification of point usage through the combination of all three brands into one single membership.
Which cards are affected?
The Premier Plus card will now be known as the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card. You’ll be charged a $95 annual fee and receive the same rewards structure as the previous card: 6 points per dollar spent at participating Marriott Bonvoy brands and 2 points per dollar on everything else. Plus, you’ll get a limited-time 100,000-point welcome offer after spending $5,000 in the first three months of account opening. That’s enough to cover a 13-night stay at any category 1 hotel worldwide.
The Marriott Bonvoy will be a contactless card, meaning you’ll tap to pay with smart card technology. Benefits of card ownership include an added free night stay after spending $60,000 each calendar year (valid at any Marriott property with a redemption value of up to 35,000 points) and access to exclusive performances and events through the Premier Experience Events platform.
With the Marriott Bonvoy card, you’re guaranteed Silver Elite Status (which gets you perks like 10% bonus points on stays, late checkout and no blackout dates) and 15 Elite Night Credits towards the next level of Elite status. (Note: Elite Night Credits do not equal free hotel stays.) Plus, you can browse special merchant offers and lock/unlock your card using the newly updated Chase mobile app.
When does the change go into effect?
New cardholders will receive the Marriott Bonvoy starting February 28 and existing cardholders can expect to receive the updated card later on this year. If you apply on or before February 12, you’ll receive the original Premier Plus bonus offer of 75,000 points and a free night anniversary award.
In addition to the Premier Plus card update, the Ritz-Carlton Rewards Card will now be known as the Ritz-Carlton Card. Be aware that new applications for this card are no longer accepted. Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Business Credit Cardmembers will not be affected by the updates and will continue to be serviced as usual. Keep in mind that starting February 13, Chase will no longer accept new applications for the Premier Plus business card.
