Savor card is back and better than ever
The new Savor card is a significant refresh on the original card, which offered 3% cash back on dining, 2% at grocery stores and 1% on everything else, and a $150 bonus if you spend $500 within the first 3 months of opening the account. The SavorOne is almost the same in rewards structure to the previous Savor card – albeit with the expanded benefits in entertainment. However, the new Savor card packs a significant rewards punch in the dining and entertainment category.
The revamped Savor card’s considerable (and unlimited) 4% cash back on dining and entertainment could see heavy-spenders in those categories realizing significant cash back rewards. Young professionals, families with a fondness for eating out, or gastronomes who love restaurant dining, this card is most definitely for you. Even with a $95 annual fee (waived for the first year), if you eat out more than 3 or 4 times a week you easily make up the expenditure — and that’s not including spending on entertainment, groceries, and everything else.
Foodies, this one’s for you
This isn’t Capital One’s first rodeo as far as a food-centric credit card is concerned. In March 2017, the issuer launched the Premier Dining Rewards card. Six months later, Capital One rebranded the card as the Savor card, with an updated and weightier rewards program and a cash back bonus within the first three months of opening an account.
Mark Mattern, managing vice president for Capital One’s U.S. card division said at the time: “We wanted to create a card that rewards people for doing what they love — gathering around the table with family and friends.” With the newly revamped Savor and SavorOne cards, the issuer seems to be doing exactly that.
Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that spending on dining out and entertainment is on the rise. In 2016 – the most recent complete data set – expenditure on what the Bureau refers to as “discretionary categories of food away from home and entertainment” rose 4.9% and 2.5% respectively, and that’s after increasing 7.9% and 4.2% in 2015. The numbers for 2017 are expected to continue the upward trend. If this nationwide increase is similarly reflected in your own household spending, it’s worth considering a cash back card that compensates you well for the dollars you’re already spending.
