Out-of-state CDs

Why won't some banks sell CDs out of state?

Many banks prefer to work with local customers who might have other accounts within the institution.

For most banks, it gets down to managing their assets and liabilities or a state regulatory issue, or both.

Banks have to do a balancing act between interest rates on assets and liabilities.

If the interest rate a bank gets on loans (assets) slips below the rate the bank is paying out on CDs (liabilities), the bank's in trouble.

If you're interested in seeing what's available nationwide, look at Bankrate.com's High Yield CDs.

Financial institutions that are listed must offer their CDs to customers nationwide.
