Top credit card issuers' penalty policies

Here's a roundup of the penalty fee policies from America's top credit card issuers:

Citibank
Late fee: $15 on balances up to $100; $25 on balances of $100 to $1,000; $35 on balances of $1,000 and more.
Over-the-limit fee: $35

    MBNA
    Late fee: $15 if balance is $500 or less; $29 on balance of $500 to$1,000; $39 if balance is $1,000.00 or more.
    Over-the-limit fee: $15 if balance is $500 or less; $29 if balance is between $500.0 to $1,000; $39 if balance is more than $1000.00.

    Bank One
    Late fee: $15 on balances up to $150; $35 on balances of $1200 and higher. If you already made one or more late payments in the prior 12-month period, you'll pay a $35 late fee regardless of the amount of your balance.
    Over-the-limit fee: $29

    Chase Manhattan
    Late fee: $15 on balances up to $150; $29 on balances of $150.01 up to $1,200; $35 on balances of $1,200.01 or greater; and $35 when a non-preferred interest rate is in effect.
    Over-the-limit fee: $29

    Discover
    Late fee: $15 on balances up to $100; $25 on balances of $100 up to $1,000; $35 on balances of $1,000 and greater.
    Over-the-limit fee: Same as late fee.

    Capital One
    Late fee: $29 if balance is less than $1,000; $35 if balance is $1,000 or higher.
    Over-the-limit fee: $29

    Bank of America
    Late fee:$19 for balances less than $100; $29 for balances $100 to $1,000; $39 for balances greater than $1,000.
    Over-the-limit fee: $35

    Providian
    Late fee: $19 if balance is less than $200; $39 if balance is $200 or greater.
    Over-the-limit fee: $0 if you exceed your credit line by less than 2 percent;
    $35 if you exceed your credit line by 2 percent or more.


    American Express
    Late fee: $15 on balances less than $100; $29 on balances of $100 to $1,000; $35 on balances greater than $1,000.
    Over-the-limit fee: $29

    Fleet
    Late fee: $35
    Over-the-limit fee: $15 if balance is up to $500; $29 if balance is $500 up to $1,000; or $35 if balance is $1,000 or greater.
