Driving for Dollars

Can leased car be returned painlessly?

Dear Terry,
My sister's husband just passed away. He had a leased car in my sisters' name because of her good credit.  She is unemployed and has no way to make the payments on the car. Can she return the leased car and not be held liable for the unpaid balance?

Dear Carlos,
Your sister should contact the leasing company and explain the situation. Based on what you've said here, the leasing company can hold her responsible, since the lease is in her name. But the circumstances here may move the leasing company to bend somewhat.
