Most dangerous jobs for teens

The final class bell is ringing for summer break, and you're ready for a change of pace. A summer job mixed with lots of fun and sun sounds about right.

Don't head out the door yet! You're anxious to beat your buddies to the best jobs in your neighborhood, but some applications just don't need to be filled out.

Every workplace has hazards -- some more than others -- and knowing what they are can save your life.

Unfortunately, some teens are hired to work in unsafe conditions without the proper training or supervision.

"Too many are injured or killed on the job because they were doing jobs against federal or state labor laws," says Darlene Adkins, Vice President for Labor Policy of the National Consumers League.

The National Consumers League, a nonprofit group representing consumers, put together a list of the five worst jobs for teens in 2004. Take a look.

  1. Agriculture: This includes jobs where you're operating or working around machinery, in confined spaces, at higher elevations, around livestock and with poultry or seafood processing.
  2. Working alone or late at night in a cash-based business: The danger for robbery is too great when a young person is alone working in a convenience store, gas station or fast-food restaurant.
  3. Construction laborer: Accidents can happen when you're roofing, siding, or working with sheet metal, concrete or near an electrical current.
  4. Driver/operator: This includes jobs where you're driving and operating, or even just a passenger, of a forklift or tractor.
  5. Traveling youth crews: Forget the money promises! Out-of-town door-to-door solicitation is unsafe.

Be choosy, and enjoy your summer safely.
