Transcript: Where's my tax refund?

There's no need to wait by the mailbox for your tax refund. Whether you opted for direct deposit or asked the IRS to mail you a check, you can track your refund in a couple ways.

Since 2003, taxpayers have been able to use the IRS's "Where's My Refund?" Web page to track down refunds directly from their own computers.

To get started, you'll need your Social Security number, the filing status entered on your return and the amount you're expecting. Joint-return filers should enter the name and tax ID number of the spouse shown first on the return.

For e-filed returns, you can access your information within 72 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt of your return. For paper returns, the wait is longer at three to four weeks.

If you don't have access to a computer or simply prefer using a telephone, you still can call the IRS to track down your refund. A special automated toll-free line is dedicated to refund status reports. When you call (800) 829-1954, you'll need the same information the online system requires.

According to the IRS, it should take no longer than three weeks to get your money if you e-filed and requested direct deposit. If you paper filed and asked that your check be mailed to you, expect to wait up to eight weeks.
