Comedian seeks new heights for his alpacas

Bankrate: When you first found success with "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," what kind of investments were you partial to?

Andy Borowitz: The one investment I've been into steadily has been alpacas. I've been raising alpacas. They're fun, and the kids love them. So that has been the one thing: Alpacas.

Bankrate: You are joking, right?

Andy Borowitz: Yes. Have you seen the ads on cable TV for alpacas?

Bankrate: I haven't.

Andy Borowitz: If you watch CNN, they're always advertising that that's how to be your own boss, raising alpacas. So somebody must be doing it. What kind of investments do I have? I'm very conservative. Here's the thing. If somebody comes to me and says, "This is a very rare investment and very hard to get into, these people really know what they're doing and it's very hard to get in on the ground floor because they're doing so well," I wonder, if they're doing so well, why aren't they just putting all of their own money into it? What do they need my money for? I generally think there's no great get-rich-quick scheme out there. People get very excited about hedge funds because they hear about them doing 700 percent in one year, and I think those would be the exceptions. I'm from Ohio, and I basically consider myself something of a hick or a rube. So I have to be especially cautious that I don't get tricked by city slickers. I think things like index funds, municipal bonds and money market funds are good. Things that preserve capital. And alpacas. You want to have some alpacas in that mix.

Bankrate: Is there any one investment over the years that did really well for you?

Andy Borowitz: Here's a very obscure investment that has done very well for me -- a little company called Berkshire Hathaway. That's been a good one. I understand the philosophy behind Berkshire Hathaway, which is that Warren Buffett is really a smart guy who can analyze a company really well, and also decide what products he really believes in because he uses them himself. He invests in a way that even someone like me can understand. I can't invest in something I don't totally understand -- like, anything that involves the word "derivative." Can't do that. I don't know what a derivative is. Unless it's a movie or TV show. Investing in a movie or TV show that's derivative is a good investment.

Bankrate: Did you do so well from "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" that you have the freedom to pursue more enjoyable projects these days without having to worry about how well they pay?

Andy Borowitz: No, because I certainly do a lot of things. For example, I'm very well paid as a corporate speaker. So I'm not sitting home clipping coupons all day, if that's what you're driving at.

Bankrate: What's next for you?

Andy Borowitz: I don't have any big plans in the works. We're just going to keep doing what we're doing -- if I may use the plural.
