Voice over 1: Because they’re non-profit, credit unions often have better deals than banks on checking accounts, savings accounts, credit cards and loans on everything from cars to houses.

Voice over 2: (Dan: Should we add chyron to above video?) But there are two drawbacks to credit unions: one, they may not be as conveniently located, which is important for things like ATM machines. And the main problem: you’ve got be a member to use one.

Voice over 3: (Dan: If you re-construct this graphic, leave out percentages) There are three main types of credit unions: those that allow you to join based on what you do for a living. Those that allow you to join based on a group you belong to. And those that allow you to join based on where you live.

Voice over 4: So how do you find out if you qualify for membership? Step one is to ask your employer. No dice? Then ask your relatives. Many credit unions will allow family of members to join.

Voice over 5: Still no luck? Then open the phone book and start browsing.

Voice over 6: (Cover with Credit Union Video) Odds are that there’s some way that you’re going to qualify for some credit union. And once you do qualify and join, you’re a member for life, even if you change careers or move away.

Standup: But however you find one, a credit union might be a good idea if you borrow or save. So check it out. For Bankrate.com, I'm Kristin Arnold.
