Bankrate's 2009 Car Guide
On the road again
With gas prices relatively low this summer, Americans will hit the road in a big way.
On the road again
10 best cars for summer road trips

On the road again?

If you're traveling by car this spring or summer, these 10 new models may add some excitement to your journey, offer the fuel efficiency for the budget- and environment-minded and boast features that enhance comfort as the hours go on.

"I love road trips," says Mike Quincy, auto content specialist for Consumer Reports. "For me, one of the most important aspects of finding a good road trip car is a tremendous driving range. You fill up the car and you hit the highways and you look at the trip computer and you can't believe the huge numbers you're getting."

Our list of 10 best cars for road trips was compiled after interviews with experts from Consumer Reports, Edmunds.com, and Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com. Factors included safety; comfort; fuel economy; storage for luggage, recreational equipment, strollers and more; and enjoyment driving or riding in the vehicle.

These are our picks, listed by body style:

Top road trip vehicles

Crossovers: Ford Flex

Minivan: Toyota Sienna

SUV: Cadillac Escalade Hybrid

Convertible: Mazda Miata MX-5

Sports car: BMW Z4 Roadster

Luxury coupe:
Infiniti G37

Hybrid: Toyota Prius

Muscle car: Chevy Corvette

Sedan: Mercedes Benz C63 AMG

Truck: Dodge Ram 1500

"You want to be comfortable," says Brian Moody, senior road test editor for Edmunds.com. "Seating is certainly the biggest thing. If you have kids or adults in the back that aren't comfortable, then you as the driver are going to be subjected to their complaints."

Notes:
1. Price data from manufacturers and Kelley Blue Book.
2. Seat/head restraints with marginal or poor geometry aren't tested dynamically because they cannot protect taller people in rear-end crashes. These seats are rated poor overall.
