The GMC Yukon Hybrid will join its GM counterpart, the Chevrolet Tahoe, which was already available with a gas-electric drive, on showroom floors for the 2009 model year.
Both SUVs employ a powertrain tandem
consisting of a 6.0-liter, eight-cylinder gasoline engine and
a 300-volt electric motor to deliver 20-plus miles per gallon
fuel efficiency. They use GM's Active Fuel Management system,
which allows half of the engine to idle when cruising, converting
the eight-cylinder engine into a four-cylinder for better highway
mileage.
The gasoline engine shuts down when the vehicles come to a stop, and the electric motor is capable of solo speeds of up to 30 mph.
The eight-passenger SUV siblings are EPA rated at 21 in the city and 22 on the highway.
Able to tow 6,200 pounds, both are also available in four-wheel drive.
