Bankrate's 2008 Car Guide
Going green
Saving cash while saving the planet is great but is it cost-effective and the right move for you?
Green is beautiful
Number of hybrid choices soar

More hybrid choices
Cadillac Escalade Lexus RX 400h
Chevrolet Malibu Mazda Tribute
Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra Nissan Altima
Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon Saturn Aura
Chrysler Aspen/Dodge Durango Saturn Vue/ Vue 2 Mode Hybrid
Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Toyota Camry
Honda Civic Toyota Highlander
Lexus GS 450h Toyota Prius
Lexus LS 600h L
Toyota Camry

If you like the idea of a Prius but want something a bit bigger, think Camry. One of the auto industry's most reliable cars -- the Camry looks even better to environmentalists when it is outfitted with Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive, the hybrid technology Toyota leases to several other carmakers.

With its efficient four-cylinder, 2.4-liter gasoline engine and its 244-volt electric motor, the Camry Hybrid cruises 33 miles for every gallon you use in the city and 34 miles for every gallon on the highway -- all in the roomy Camry package.

The Camry uses a full-hybrid drive, meaning it can operate in an all-electric mode, all-gasoline mode or a combination of the two.

And while Toyota has sold so many of its popular hybrid cars that new purchases no longer qualify for federal tax incentives, at just over $25,000, the Camry Hybrid doesn't cost a whole lot more than a comparably equipped gasoline-only Camry.
