New in 2009, Cadillac is marrying its
luxury reputation with a new green appeal in its Escalade
Hybrid. This eight-seat giant sports a 6.0-liter, eight-cylinder
engine assisted by a 300-volt electric drive.
The Escalade is a full hybrid, meaning it runs in electric-only mode during slow city driving and during stop-and-go traffic, and uses the gas engine for power assists when it is under heavy load or when the driver needs speed in a hurry. When it comes to a complete stop, the engine shuts down completely to further save fuel.
On the highway during cruising speeds, the Escalade uses General Motors' Active Fuel Management system, which allows half of the engine to idle and converts the eight-cylinder engine into a four-cylinder for better highway mileage.
The Escalade is rated to tow a maximum of 5,800 pounds.
Cadillac includes the electric drive
components in its eight-year, 100,000-mile emissions-control
warranty.
