Fame & Fortune Q&A:
Bankrate: How do you handle the money side of your sport?
Ed Viesturs: I do the whole deal. I'm a one-man show, pretty much; I send invoices, create contracts, deposit the check and do my own books. I have an accountant now who helps me, but through the year I handle all the accounts receivable.
Bankrate: Are you a risk-taker when it comes to investing?
Ed Viesturs: I'm very conservative. I look at my house, which I'm still paying for, as an investment. Then I have some other funds that I have with a guy that carefully and securely puts it in places that I'm comfortable with. I have my own retirement account as well. As a self-employed person, I have to think that I won't be able to do this forever and I need to set up retirement, I need to set up accounts for my kids to go to school. That's stuff that I have to do on my own. Health insurance, the whole deal.
Self-employed workers need to plan their personal finances carefully.
