With all the financial discussions and political pandering about avoiding the "fiscal cliff," here's a solution I bet you haven't thought of: Join a dating service that will find you a rich man. Of course, there are some caveats -- you have to be a woman and you have to be beautiful (at least as defined by the dating service).
The dating website SeekingArrangement.com is offering a "fiscal cliff promotion" that in a nutshell allows "attractive" women to sign up for a free premium membership so they can find a rich man to offset the negative impact of tax increases associated with the fiscal cliff.
A promotional video asserts that "instead of feeling powerless, attractive women are improving their financial situation by dating successful men."
I'll leave it to you to draw your own conclusions, but in the interest of providing a few more concrete, intelligent financial options, here are some tactics for both men and women who are worried about higher taxes next year.
- Sell appreciated stock or real estate this year to avoid paying a higher capital gains tax. But if you plan on holding securities or real estate for the long term, it makes more sense to keep these assets. Taxes should not be the driver of your investment goals, especially over the long term.
- If you have the option of receiving a bonus from your employer this year or next, take it this year. Ditto if you have stock options you can exercise this year as opposed to next.
- If you're looking to maximize tax savings on contributions, consider giving to charity next year, when the tax savings could be worth more.
