Free stuff on tax day is a ritual that's almost as time-honored as the annual filing task.
Most of the goodies are of the edible type. I guess we tend to work up appetites as we're working on our 1040s. But there are a few other service-oriented free offerings. Some freebies are for tax day, April 17, only. Others are available before and after the filing deadline.
And a few places are offering special tax day prices.
Here's what I've found so far. Before you head out, be sure to double-check that the deal is still on and always read any coupon fine print.
Arby's is offering free curly fries on April 17 only. You'll need to go to the fast-food eatery's Facebook page and print out the coupon.
Boston Market customers can get an individual free meal when they purchase another meal and fountain drink. The deal is available on April 17 only and you'll need the coupon you can download at the restaurant's website.
Bruegger's is selling its Big Bagel Bundle for $10.40 through April 17. Again, you'll need to print out the coupon on the company's Facebook page.
Cinnabon is handing out two free Cinnabon Bites to each person who stops by between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on tax day.
Chili's is offering, via a coupon at its Facebook page, a free appetizer or dessert with the purchase of an adult entree through April 18.
Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour Restaurants will pick up the tax portion of meals eaten at the chain's stores in Hawaii and Southern California.
Hooters is offering 20 boneless wings for $9.99 on April 17 at its participating locations.
HydroMassage locations nationwide are offering free massages through April 20. You can get a coupon to help relieve your tax-related stress at the company's website. You also might want to make an appointment then, too, as I suspect a lot of folks will need this stress-relieving treatment.
Maggie Moo's Ice Cream & Treatery will be handing out a free scoop of new yogurt flavors at participating stores between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on April 17.
Marble Slab Creamery is offering a free scoop of frozen dessert between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., again on tax day only.
Office Depot is helping taxpayers clear tax-related clutter. If you've got a lot of old tax, or other, records you no longer need, you can take up to five pounds of paper to your local office supply store on April 16 and shred it for free. You also can make up to 25 black and white copies of your 2011 tax return, again on the eve before tax day only.
Before you go clear-the-documents-deck crazy, remember that you need to hang onto some tax records for at least three years and others, such as copies of your actual returns, for, well, forever. Sorry, clean freaks.
Panda Express is giving out a free single serving of Shanghai Angus Steak on April 17. You'll need to go to the restaurant's Facebook page and print out the coupon.
P.F. Chang's is offering a 15 percent discount on dine-in and carry-out orders on April 17.
Seattle's Best Coffee is offering what it's dubbed the Great American Coffee Refund on tax day. You can stop by any of the coffee shops and get a free small cup of brewed coffee. Check out its Facebook page for details as well as a way to get a free sample of coffee via mail.
Sonic can help quench your caffeine-free tax day thirst. It's selling drinks and slushes at half price on filing deadline day.
I heard about most of these tax day specials via MrFreeStuff.com, Couponing101.com and BradsDeals.com. If you know of other tax day freebies or discounts, please share with the rest of us by leaving a comment.
Finally, don't forget the ultimate free tax deal, Uncle Sam's Free File. This online partnership between the Internal Revenue Service and around a dozen tax software manufacturers offers no-cost tax preparation and e-filing to taxpayers whose adjusted gross income is $57,000 or lower. It will be available through Oct. 15 if you find you need an extension to finish your 2011 return.
And good luck today finishing your federal -- and state -- taxes.
Bankrate's tax help also is free and available year-round through tax newsletters. The no-cost Daily Tax Tip mailing will be delivered through April 17. And once tax day 2012 passes, stay up to date on tax news and tips via the free Weekly Tax Tip newsletter. Or if you're a tax geek like me, sign up for both!
