The holiday season brings heart-warming memories -- but it can also leave a hole in your wallet.

So Bankrate wants to play Santa and hand out some cash in a frugal holiday tips contest!

Tell us how you make the holidays special without overspending. Your frugal holiday tip can be about anything from cooking and gift-giving to decorating and entertaining.

We'll award a $500 grand prize to the person with best frugal, festive tip and a $250 second-place prize.

Bankrate judges will determine the grand prize winner based on the creativity of the frugal holiday tip. The second-place winner will be chosen at random.

UPDATE -- Dec. 20, 2012: Thank you to everyone for participating! We had fun reading everyone's frugal holiday tips!

Our second place winner was Kenia from Texas.

Our grand prize winner was Susan from Florida. Her tip said:

"I buy unique items at ShopGoodwill.com. You never know what you will find AND it all goes to a great cause. Like other auction sites without the mark-ups."

Congratulations, ladies!

I shop online through cashback sites and shop on sites that offer free shipping and also use my credit card that offers cash back. Then, of course, pay the credit card statement off so that I don't have to pay any interest.

I shop the stores that have sales already, then use on-line or in-store coupon. I end up getting just about 75% off and always free shipping if buying on-line. If coupon does not work I call customer service and give them my order with coupon.

Shop sales all year long. Keep gifts handy. That way you will not run out of birthday, anniversary, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Christmas, etc. gifts.

Pick names out of a hat for family/co-workers so you can focus on giving one thoughtful gift instead of a bunch of cheaper ones. If appropriate, a homemade gift that deals with the recipients interests or hobbies is even better!

I plan ahead and find 1 quality gift for each person on my list and then wait till the price drops and/or I have an online coupon or other savings to get the best possible deal I can.

While I definately take advantage of holiday sales I have had to learn to be more aware of what I was buying. I was buying more than I needed just because it was on sale. I learned my lesson when a basement full of stuff I had basically hoarded during holiday and holiday clearance sales was ruined when my basement flooded. Now I only buy what we need and can use...that's really saving money!

Shop year round so you're not spending more money last minute to hurriedly finish your Christmas list!!

I use swagbucks to save up Amazon gift cards through the year, & then use the gift cards to purchase Christmas gifts.
