In the spirit of the holiday season, Bankrate's credit card blog is giving you the gift of credit card tips! We will be posting one tip a day over the next 12 business days to make sure you and your wallet are merry and bright once your Christmas list is completed. Happy shopping!
Have you made this far and stayed under budget? Or, is your credit card too tempting and your budget too stretched? Maybe it's time to spend this last weekend before Christmas at home making presents rather than in the mall buying them.
The stigma once associated with do-it-yourself, or DIY, gifts, has fallen by the wayside, says Shane Holdaway, president of Capital One Canada. Seven in 10 people surveyed in a pre-holiday survey by Capital One said they planned on giving a DIY gift.
"You see the rise of DIY blogs and the growing interest in Pinterest," says Holdaway, referencing the social media platform that allows you to share images that you have "pinned," many of them craft-related. "It's not like back in the day and giving a fruitcake. It's more common and accepted."
DIY gifts are often cheaper, too, given you have the supplies at home already. Pinterest, along with many mom/craft blogs offer great ideas for beginners.
If you don't feel too crafty but can work it in the kitchen, consider offering close family and friends an invitation to dinner, says Holdaway. That may even be more welcomed than a gift.
"The holidays are about being with people you love, after all," says Holdaway.
Have you made a gift for someone this year or in years past? Was it well received?
