American Express cardholders now can use their rewards points to pay for Big Apple cab fares instantly, thanks to a partnership between the credit card issuer and VeriFone Systems.

Cardholders must register for the program ahead of time. After that, cardholders will have the option of paying with points when they swipe their cards through VeriFone's terminals attached to the in-car taxi televisions. American Express cardholders can use points for tips and tolls, too.

The service is only available in the more than 7,000 New York City taxicabs that have VeriFone's taxi televisions.

In related taxi news, all Washington, D.C., cabs should now take credit cards for payment. The Oct. 1 deadline requiring credit card readers came after many rounds of extensions by the D.C. Taxicab Commission -- and protests by drivers.

Here's a quick look at the five largest U.S. cities and their taxi policies regarding credit card payments.
