A new shopping Web site launched on Friday for consumers with an eligible MasterCard-branded prepaid, debit or credit card. MasterCard MarketPlace features discount offers averaging 5 percent to 20 percent and other benefits from thousands of participating merchants, according to its Web site. Users see personalized offers based on vendor preferences they set upon sign up, location and Web site activity. Consumers can also sign up for e-mail reminders for deals from certain merchants.
There's no membership fee, but consumers must enroll their card through the Web site: marketplace.mastercard.com. Those who want deeper discounts (20 percent to 50 percent discounts on average) and premium perks can upgrade to MasterCard MarketPlace Plus, which costs an annual fee of $29.95. The fee is waived for those with World MasterCard cards.
The site is part of a new three-year partnership between the payment processor and Next Jump Inc., a New York-based e-commerce firm.
MasterCard isn't the only payment network to offer merchant discounts to cardholders. Visa has an array of deals on its Web site and a monthly newsletter. American Express offers sale prices on products and services through its Daily Wish e-mails.
