Another Target oops: Gift cards

As if a massive data breach during the holidays wasn't bad enough for Target, now it appears the retailer sold faulty gift cards, too.

The nation's second largest discount retailer confirmed to Bankrate that 0.1 percent of gift cards it sold during the holidays were not activated properly, according to company spokeswoman, Molly Snyder.

Consumers with faulty gift cards would find their cards had a zero balance, Snyder says. Affected consumers can bring the card to the customer service desk at their local store or call 1-800-544-2943 for assistance. The retailer will honor all impacted cards, Snyder says.

The latest snafu pales in comparison to the huge breach Target stores suffered from Nov. 27 through Dec. 15. The retailer said 40 million credit card and debit card accounts were compromised in the breach. Hackers stole consumer's names, card account numbers, expiration dates, security codes and encrypted personal identification numbers, or PINs, of debit cards. It was the second largest data breach at a U.S. retailer.

Did you get a faulty Target gift card? Was it resolved?

people need to stop knocking target. the problems they are having could happen to any store. the lucky grocery stores where I live had the same security breach last year. I do not encourage people to stop shopping at target. walmart has very bad customer service and there employees are very rude. I am a target employee and we value our customers very highly.

A security breach has nothing to do with good or bad customer service. I am willing to bet the people that are angry and want further compensation, I bet you own an Iphone or Ipad or both with all the bells and whistles and have TV's no less than 46 inches not to mention the top notch service plans. (you see all the time the ones who don't have two nickels to rub together) You might want to scale back on the STUFF you want, focus on the things you need and your families should have food. Might not be what they eating on your reality shows you have to watch on your LED's, but it will be nutritious. OH and cross your legs. Cant get pregnant that way.

CD-You're solution is to run to WalMart, the lowest of the low?
Rose- Sounds like you and daughter are a couple of baby machines.

My daughter received 2 different ones for graduation gifts that they wouldn't honor. How long has it been going on?

First it was my debt card and now a 50 dollar gift card. Target has two strikes one more and I will be shopping at Walmart.

ok, so how many gift cards are equal to 0.1 percent sold. . .100, 500? Do they have an actual number of faulty cards? A percent really doesn't tell us much. . .

Not surprising for Target. I got a gift card for $50 years ago that was never activated and Target would not honor it. I took it as a sign they don't much care for customer service which is evident with this breach of security.
