Obviously you people in the East do very little reading. I know it's hard but try. If you look at the deficit 15.6 trillion at this time, and you look at it when George W. Bush left office around 4.3 trillion, you will notice a mathematical difference in the process called subtraction. Now, you take that difference and note the things he bought with it and how it affected the economy. Please don't talk trash. Did it create jobs? The answer is no. Did it help consumers save their retirements or mortgages. The answer is no. Do we still have a foreclosure problem? Do we still have increasing unemployment? The answer is Yes. Can we pay back this much debt (the 15.6 trillion)? The answer is No. So why are you morons still in the lifeboat with this administration?

The 1 dollar coin and any other dollar denomination of coin is to be avoided at all costs. I have lived in England and on the Continent for years. In England my name for the Pound coins was "tons" because that's how much they weighed as you accumulated them in your pocket. And having a coin purse is one more thing I DON'T need in any of my pockets. I've use the Euro 1 and 2 Euro coins, though less weighty, the same issue goes. $1 coins accumulate at the same rate as $1 bills. It's annoying. plus it is done at the convenience of vending machines. Sorry, but vending machines are to be at MY convenience. Bills fit and fold better into my wallet, a single object I carry neatly in one pants or coat/jacket pocket.. Just Like the VAT - Value Added Tax, this is something we should learn from the Europeans is a bad idea and NOT DO! EVER!

BTW, @Judy, "In God We Trust" is on all dollar coins. It is now printed directly beneath the head of the President on the obverse of the coin; earlier coins had it on the edge, around the rim.

Obamacare is suppose to lower the cost of insurance? Well, my premiums went up for a lesser plan. I now have a deductible on MRI's and lab work that I did not have before the FREE preventative care. Let me tell you this. IT IS NOT FREE. Someone (Me, you, the taxpayer) is paying for this care. One way or another it will be paid for. The insurance companies will not eat the difference. In the mean time, all the uninsured that will get subsidies will get insurance. Which again means someone will be paying for it. I paid for insurance since the day I was an adult. Whether I was healthy or not, I wanted to know I was covered.

"We can't give them back as change for customers because customers don't want them."

Absolutely not true...Americans would love the "gold" dollars if 1) they knew they existed and 2) if they could ever find a single one in circulation. I have 1 Washington Dollar coin that someone used at my register [I took a dollar bill out of my wallet and kept the coin] 5 years ago. Since then, I have not seen a single dollar coin in circulation. My dad has said that he even went to several banks asking about them and none of them had any, some even saying they'd never even heard of them. Until this article, I had assumed the late night infomercial folks had simply bought them all up to sell at inflated "never circulated" prices. Now it appears the real reason is that the banks simply assumed no one would want them and refused to take them, meaning they never made it into circulation in the first place.

Take it 1 step further. Mint $1 and $2 coins and drop the $1 bills. It would save the treasury enourmous amounts of money but it'll never happen.

...well, all this that this guy has written is, well, fine. However, a couple of questions. With the millions coming into the 'now-I-have-health-insurance' system, where are the doctors, nurses, dentists, clinics, hospitals, and other medical resources that are going to be needed to service all these new patients?

Then, with the unemployment rate still high and it seems that it may never come down for lack of new additional jobs, what and how do these unemployed people pay for their health care? Do the rest of us pay for them, or do they even have to pay for health care?

Then, as is with anything that can be provided for by the nanny Federal government, for one to believe that the costs for health services and drugs will not continue to rise requires a "suspension of disbelief". When that happens, how will that affect the premiums we will be mandated to pay?

Dollar coins rarely stay in the cash register for long once customers know they are there.

Few people even know the dollar coins exist.

Dollar coin mistakes are valuable. Buying dollars from the bank is the only game of chance that you never lose.

Takes 5 dollar coins to equal 1 ounce in weight. Most people carry very few dollars at any given time. Weight is not a problem for consumers.

Dollar coins are better than the lottery. The mistakes are worth $50 to $500 each. There is even one mistake worth $70,000+. Picking up some dollar coins at the bank is the one game of chance that you never lose.

They are sacrificing saving 184 million dollars a year to save 50 million dollars a year. This isn't about saving money. This is politics. Republicans had proposed legislation to eliminate the dollar bill. Democrat Kerry and Republican Scott opposed this and got Obama's ear on this issue. Hopefully the Republican president starting in 2013 will reverse this costly decision.

It gets very tiring hearing you whiners bash the President.nWake up to reality. GM is alive and Bin Laden is dead. The Republican extremists could not accomplish ether one! Futhermore, there is no evidence that the new healthcare laws are ruining anything. To the contrary, more people (including 60, 000 children in Michigan alone and also people with pre-existing conditions) now have healthcare. I don't think that they are whining. Do some research and stop listening to the lies of right wing extremists who only criticize the policies of others and have no ideas of their own.

I have a response to the statement in the article duplicated below:

"There's a lot to like about $1 coins. They are more durable than paper money, and they're easier and cheaper to handle".

I move money for a living. Dollar coins are not popular, and are not easier to handle, move, store than paper dollars. Dollar coins obviously are more durable. Yet they weigh more and require more space. Who would want to carry ten dollar coins in their pants rather a $10 bill in the wallet? A hundred? I find the statement naive. Try transporting a million dollars in coin or a few bags of miilion cash. The Gov't wasted tax payer money again.

The gov't was stupid in not stopping printing of $1 bills. They should eliminate the penny too and round all transactions to the nearest nickel. Hopefully the gov't will either stop printing $1 bills and start with $1 coins or never again make a $1 coin. They have never been that successful in the past, esp. after 1900.

No way. The 1-year charts look like something out of "Frommer's Guide to Hiking the Carpathian Mountains".

Markets are up fractionally over the last 365-days. Whoever is calling this a "bull market" apparently forgot what we went through in August-September 2011.

I call "bull" on their claim of a bull market. We're only back to even for the most part.

It has become old hat to continue to harp on what you perceive as "lack of progress" for President Obama. History has shown that there have been slow progress on issues inherited from previous administrations, lack of moral character, dirty politics and outright lying and criminal behaviors in the Oval office since it's inception. When has anyone been under the microscope to the degree of this President? One need only to do the research to see what that office has hidden or lied about to keep the American people blind and uninformed. It is a thankless job that only someone who feels they can make a difference would endure. He was duly elected BY THE PEOPLE, as the rule book deemed required. Those who are so vicious should be honest and acknowleged the basis for their venom. You need not share it, as I'm sure ignorance is not something you would want decent reasonable people to know fuels your comments. People like you are the reason the US is viewed with such distain all over the world. You are proof positive that the US does not and can not adhere to the creed of 'ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL". I know you feel you have the RIGHT to your opinion and to verbalize it--Guess what? The President is the one who can and has ensured that you retain that right. You are a sad, bitter individual with time on their hands. Find something useful to do and grow up.

We need Obama's FHA refi plan as it gives hope to honest people who are paying somehow to keep their home. Have ARM, cannot get loan modification, banks ask for closing costs to refinance. This will be big generous help for survival in this turbulent economy!~

1 dollar coins are absolutely annoying for retailers. We can't drop them in the safe because all safes now a days have an electronic feeder for bills, but not the coins. We can't give them back as change for customers because customers don't want them. They are basically useless junk in the cash drawer until we either acquire enough that we just take em to the bank, or a customer who collects them sees them in the cash drawer and offers to buy them.

That's funny, I have to have car insurance by law to drive my car, even though I never had or plan on having an accedent. Lets see... about $250 a month lifetime average over a 18 year span...
at least healthcare I would use.
Besides, they are just dictating that you must have insurance, not what kind. You could go for a cheap minimal coverage type, then at least in an unforseen accedent the taxpayers dont have to pick up your tab. Thats all the mandate is really about. AND, that will eventually cause insurance for everybody to go down.
Or, you could just let the government provide "free" healthcare that come directly out of your check in the form of taxes and hope dems and repubs can agree onfunding your treatments.
I mean, even you Obama haters gotta agree that SOMETHING needs to be done before you have NO medicare,ect... just cause fox news told you this is bad, and the ins. corps are against it and want to scare you, try using your overpriced, underinsured brain.

@President Madagascar - I agree wholesomely! Turn those machines off! I suggest cutting all power source when not in use - electrical and pull out the battery! Keeping your computer on over days to me is like leaving your signed blank checkbook on the patio! Besides, how long does it really take to power up your computer? Cost-benefit analysis .... safer with computer off.

I love the dollar coins. "People hate them." Oh, really? How can you hate something you don't see without specifically requesting them from the bank. I find them so convenient and it beats running through your wallet to pull a bill out when you just reach in your pocket.

The reason the dollar coins do not take is the one dollar bills were kept in circulation. If one dollar bills were no longer printed, then the coins would work....that is how it was done in Canada. Dollar bills are not a right, it is just political fear that keeps the paper dollars being made. The amount of savings overall from changing to coins would far outweigh the savings from stopping the coin production. Of course that would take guts and a little forward thinking....good luck with that.

1.helping young adults stay on parents insurance is very limited and short so not much help to most.
2.preventative health services have been there for quite some time from what i have seen at very low cost or free.
3.We are not on medicare or medicaid.
4.Our small business has very high insurance rates because they cannot afford to help pay for it so it didn't help us any. We carry Anthem for the family because work insurance is just not affordable at all.
5.pre-exisiting helps a few people but not worth what we paid for it in tax dollars.
6.lifetime limit benfits - ok IF we need that later woohoo.

Fact is, we pay alot per month for healthcare premiums even though we don't use it much. Our insurance premiums went up over one hundred dollars a month this year for the same plan except with a higher deductable. Government spends all this money up front on people without insurance and middle class have nothing to show for it. Many places are raising their rates at alarming rates and we need relief now in the way of cost without lessening of the benefits at least too much. If the middle class aren't seeing any direct relief then what good is this expensive mistake of a plan.

Carried Allstate for two decades without filing one claim. After hurricanes and ice storms put trees on my home and cracks from this summer's east coast earthquake did minor damage, I feared Allstate cancelling my policy so opted to bear the expenses of repair myself rather than file a claim and jeopardize my policy being cancelled! A lot of good that did! They cancelled me anyway, and for what....not having a car insured by them. THIS is what earns corporate Amerika a bad name! I wouldn't look at another Allstate policy if it was free!

"[B]y what logic would anyone undo all of the good listed above?"

That logic, Jay, is the United States Constitution. It contains something called the Commerce Clause, which is the keystone of federal regulatory power. Unfortunately, that clause doesn't confer power upon the government to coerce citizens to perform some affirmative action, that is, to purchase a commodity or service.

Asking the Justices to consider all "the good" the Affordable Care Act will do further displays your ignorance. If you knew anything about United States governance, you would know that the Supreme Court's only role is "to say what the law is." They do not, and will not, consider the social benefits of universal healthcare. Instead, their job is to analyze whether the affirmative obligations placed upon Americans by the Act comports with our national Rule of Law.

Learn how the government works and stop writing ignorant, logic-less articles.

The problem as I see it is that the $1 coin was close enough in size to the quarter to be easily confused with it.
If the team involved with the design of this coin had at least the brains of a grasshopper they wouldn't have made this mistake.

The penny, nickel, dime and quarter coins are all unique in size, color and texture. However, there's hardly any significant difference between the quarter and the dollar coins. If dollar coins were DISTINCTLY different from quarters, people would use them more often. Preferably they would be modeled after the British pound coin which looks and feels like it is worth more than the variety of British pence coins rather than the Canadian loonie and toonie which look and feel worthless. Unlike with dollar bills which you can easily read and determine denomination, people don't want to have to squint and read their coins to know which denominations they are, they just want to know.

George,

I have been meaning to pull out my mortgage documents to see if I am at my cap minimum because I must be being that my Mortgage has been stuck at 6% for the past 3 years. I understand I'm a little better off, but it sucks that I have excellent credit and decent income BUT can't take advantage of the lower rates (or stop my rate from increasing when/if the market does begin to improve) simply becuase the bottom dropped out of the market. I feel like I've been living in fear of my interest rate increasing for 3 years. Should I have to pay an increased payment just because I can afford it according to the banks? I'm attempting to do the right thing and pay down student loan debt and what not, but if my payment increases, thats less I can put towards those. I would be content if my bank would just lock me in at the 6% that I'm currently at that way I can plan accordingly in the future but that is apparently too much to ask. So in turn, this Obama plan would be my only salvation, but I don't think it will ever pass.

As a practicing Bariatric physician(medical weight-loss)who uses pharmacotherapy (off-label) with great safety and long term efficacy; my staff and I are brought "free lunch" about every 2 months by a variety of intelligent, well trained pharmaceutical reps. They are usually accompanied by a physician who is an expert in his/her specialty of medicine who gives a meaningful and informative discussion relating to a particular drug prior to an open exchange of ideas and questions. No trips to Hawaii, and no gifts of money. PS The "free" food?? usually mediocre and too many carbs!

It always strikes me as odd when one of the least ethical groups in America, the Congress (75% of whom are lawyers), seeks to control the ethical behavior of the most ethical group in America, the physicians. Our government runs on SuperPacs, lobbyists, influence peddling, but doctors are likely to sell their soul for a pad of sticky notes. Given the effects government has had on medicine to date, their biggest and best contribution in the future would be to stay out of healthcare.

Well everyone should do the math. On a case by case basis. Ultimately the majority will benefit. There is always someone ready to criticize folks, no matter who is the President. It comes with the job and Obama is just trying to help. Both Democrats and Republicans should and will most likely support this if at least only to get votes.

Andy, if you have a true ARM the adjustment is tied to a basis factor that compared to 2005 rates HAS TO BE lower now than then. When you add your adjustment factor your rate OUGHT to be lowered every 6 months. Now your cap on lowering may not allow for the full adjustment available but you are WAY better off than a lot of people. If on the other hand your rate automatically goes up every 6 months then that is not a true ARM and you got messed around at closing.

Agreed. I would be really skeptical of the deal for a couple of reasons. One, the rate is, as you pointed out, well above-market. Second, regardless of whether the CD is brokered or not, they should be able to tell you the issuing bank. At the very least, this is essential for making certain you don't already have deposits with that bank that would push you over the FDIC limit of $250k, but in this case, along with the above market rate, makes me suspicious. As a rule of thumb, most reputable brokers are happy to provide information/disclosure to the nth degree.

What about the assessed values of the properties, why is no-one held responsible for the prices that the homes were assessed at. Property was always an investment that you could not loose with, personally being a first home buyer I was scared into buying a home due to the fact they were going up so quickly and was sure I would not be able to afford a home in the future. The fair thing to do would be to refinance everyones mortgauge to the fair assessed value of today.

I'm from the school of thought that you don't spend more than you have in your bank account, so I have never enrolled in overdraft protection. The approach taken by TCF Bank of giving customers a choice allows them to utilize the pricing structure that's right for them. That's a positive step toward creating a better customer experience. It will be interesting to see whether the new structure will serve customers well.

I think that JP Chase should def have to pay back a portion of the overdraft fees they charged because their practice was predatory. Of course in a perfect world, no one would ever overdraft their bank accounts, but most people make mistakes from time to time. When a customer makes a mistake the bank is entitled to charge a fee, but Chase was intentionally changing the order of debits to most increase the chance of mistakes and thereby increase their fees. Perhaps when there is no more free checking (as this blogger and many others think is coming in the near future), there won't be a need for banks to use predatory practices in their fee collection. Until then, the banks are going to continue to be slapped with class action law suits when they step over the line.

I know that that this country needs some kind of healthcare that would cover everyone, but we all hate to have something forced on us.The people who don't have insurance now, fill the emergency rooms around the country, causing the small hospitals to go broke. The big problem with this new Obamacare was that one party pushed it through without any input from the other party. They needed to respect one another and work things out together.
I know that money is the root of the problem.I know that money spent on wars could help with this.We should have made Iraq and Libya paid us back with oil for the money we spent liberating their countries. Also our government needs to stop spending money on unnessary things that would benefet only a small part of the population.

Good thing all of the "benefits" listed are free!! Why don't we just mandate that the government require free healthcare for all and be done with it. And why not free food? Don't we all have a constitutional right to be able to eat? And free housing! No one should have to live in the cold.

"Larry" - why such a short memory / history with health insurance premiums? As a small-business owner (who is `socialist' to the extent that I insist that I provide health insurance for my people), I've seen our company's insurance premiums rise 12% to 20% PER YEAR for the last six of seven years...

The lone exception was THIS policy renewal period (the first after the implementation of "Obamacare")... when our premiums went up...0.02% (by just $4) - because the insurance companies now have to justify and explain spending more than 20% of premium income on management and overhead (salary and bonus) expenses.

All of the other increases - which turned health insurance into our highest fixed monthly expense - hit us BEFORE even the threat of health care / health insurance reform had been spoken. Our premiums are still too high - but they only went up, Up, UP under the `free market'... so I'm all in favor of the `heavy hand of government' keeping a lid on things.

I wanted to point out that there are people like my family which relocated for work and had to rent out our home instead of selling it due to the housing crash. We are not upside down on our rental, but we are stuck with it. We are a single income family with three kids and are forced to pay the difference between rent and the mortgage because of our crazy high interest rate. A letter arrived today from our lender stating that we are eligible for a refinance program under HARP at no cost. If we do in fact qualify, this loan could put us into a position where we can save up for a replacement car or save up to take our kids to Disney Land. This refinance program helps families like our who are blessed with work, but blindsided by the stagnant market, begin to put money back into the economy.

WOW! Spoken like a true Socialist. You know, I recall feeling a sense or urgency to find employment when I was no longer covered by my parents health plan. I laugh at you and your notion that young adults should be covered by their parents until they are 26 years old. Are you f'n kidding me? What age to you propose parents be allowed to finally cut that umbilical cord. You probably still live at home with mommy and daddy, don't you? Idiot!

W Abraham, The only ones who agree with this artical are the parasite leeches (democrats) who think they know what is best for everyone as long as it is not there money.
So when are we going to make a mandate for life insurance as this I can promise you everyone will die someday, and why should a heavey drinker and chain smoker have to pay any more for his $500k life insurance plan than someone who eat properly, exercises regularly and does not drink. What next can they find mandate?
By the way, all you fricking liberal leeches want to blame insurance companies... Have you ever thought of who they are paying out of your premiums? HOSPITALS. Have you ever been to a hospital and received a bill? That alone will give you a coronary, hmmmm I wonder if that is covered under ObumbleCare.

This artical is total propaganda bunk. My health insurance premiums have went up 35% in the last 2 years and I was at the doctors office for my daughter to have two teeth surgically removed and my cost was going to be $2200, and YES I have insurance with a $350 deductable. So I can tell you right now it is not the insurance companies that are raping the people it is the health care facilities.
Might I add that I did not have the surgery as I can not afford what I pay every month in premiums plus what the hospital wanted to bend me over the desk for also.
So as far as I am concerned all this Obamacare plan has done is cause the hospitals to jack up prices as now they know they can get it.

Mr. McDonald forgets two big benefits: the insurance companies will rake in more money and the government expands its power and control over the people.

If the Supreme Court upholds it: enjoy the death panels!

I remember the Balanced Budget Act of 1998. Seniors were denied medical care for two years before the government backed down and reversed many of the cutbacks. I remember elderly women crying because no one would take care of their broken legs.

Nothing is destroying jobs and the economy more than the fear and uncertainty generated by Obama's Marxist scams, mainly Obamacare.

AT&T, AK Steel, Caterpillar, Deere, Valero Energy and several other large companies reported that the Obamacare scam will cost them billions.

Additionally, 6 million small businesses also believe Obamacare will increase costs. Only 12% of those businesses may receive some type of help.

And as most of those businesses were already hurting, many will be forced to reduce salaries, let people go, close or move to FREER countries.

As a result, more Americans are going to become unemployed. And the few lucky enough to have a job will become poor after paying for everyone else.

That’s what happens in every commie country, as the country Obama and his comrades are trying to create in the U.S. with “help-the-poor” scams like Obamacare.

Well, as long as you think it is ok for the govt to mandate this, then how about they mandate a required fitness tests, weight limits, and diet restrictions. If the barely 50% who actually pay taxes have to support the just under 50% who don't, then all should have to meet the requirement to be entitled for the benefit. Public health is a requirement, it is not a right.you as a citizen have a requirement to meet some minimum standards in the interest of the whole. Funny how the liberals always seem to forget Kennedy's words about "what you can do"

The Law of Unintended Consequences is going to impact a lot of people. Often Pharmaceutical Rep.s bring lunch so busy Physicians will take the time to listen to educational presentations about new medicines. Sure the presentations are biased, but they also hear from the competitors. This 'adversarial system' (reminds me of our legal system), in addition to the professional journal articles and papers Physicians receive, helps educate them on advances patients can use.

Now, to avoid any appearance of impropriety, many Physicians won't bother meeting with drug rep.s. Maybe they'll eventually run across a journal article if they have time & energy left over.

Cutting off a source of Physician education in light of the huge amount of ever growing medical info. out there is a very bad idea.

Jim & Don, check facts before you post such nonsense. HR-4646 and HR-1125 (both bills are virtually the same, titled "Debt Free America Act") have NO co-sponsors and have nto been publically acknowledged in Congress. It has not been endorsed or supported by a single person in the Obama administration. And if you were to read the current bill, you'd find that personal bank deposits would NOT be subject to the tax.

"EXCEPTIONS- The term ‘specified transaction’ shall not include--(A) any transfer between accounts of the taxpayer, and (B) any deposit into a personal account of an individual."

This proposal isn't even going to be voted on, let alone passed. That is a FACT.

I love dollar coins. For anything less than $5 I don't have to get my wallet out. They are very handy. I bought bags of them from the Mint, mostly at cost. One side effect is that I ended u with a lot of quarter at the end of the day, which was very handy also.

The problem isn't that Americans hate them. The problem is that retailers hate them. They don't like hauling them to the repository at night. The dollar coins make the bags too heavy. I had one retailer who was so annoyed he gave me a 50 cent piece (guess who is on that) as change once with a "oh, well, here, take that." and no smile.

In all the years and hundreds of dollars I used, I never got one back, not once. The retailers were of a single mind to take them out of circulation. It's too bad.

Biggest bunch of BS I have ever read! The NYT is way off and that study was not balanced. Doctors are totally being persecuted in this Obamacare era and will simply result in less care for all. While we are at it, lets scrutinize insurance CEOs their salaries and where they play golf? How about how many homes they own? Fancy cars? The companies and corporate culture gets rich collecting huge premiums and then denying care. This blog is a tool of the insurers see your health care dollars at work!

Does anyone under the age of 40 even know what the words "balance the checkbook" mean?

The banks can charge enough fees to make it all worthwhile. You don't think refinancing is free do you?
Plus there are enough idiot investment managers out there to continue making the resale of loans profitable. A bank can profit on the refi and then again on the resale of the loan.

Thank you to Marian and Evan135 for setting Mr. MacDonald straight!!! This article infuriates me due to it's inaccurate content. The "gravy train" as he calls it ended sometime ago. My husband a family practice doctor can't even receive so much as Pen or Pad of paper from pharmaceutical companies any more. And as Marian stated an occasional lunch does not influence his practice.
Evan stated very nicely the first thought that came to my head - maybe these two politicians should reevaluate where they get their money and lobbyists, especially the PHARMACEUTICAL LOBBYISTS!!!

Evan stated very nicely the first thought that came to my head - maybe these two politicians should reevaluate where they get their money and lobbyists, especially the PHARMACEUTICAL LOBBYISTS!!!

I agree with Evan123. I have worked as a pharmaceutical represesntative for 11 years. Many years ago Dr's were taken to expensive dinners and trips to be educated about new products. Over the last 7 years the industry has increased internal controls that have severely limited that practice. I am also married to a physician and I can tell you that soemone brining lunch to his office so his staff can eat and get back to work does not influence him inappropriately. To say that Dr's are only out for kickbacks is insulting to a group of people who have taken years to be qualified to take care of their community.

Again the US Government is creating rules that are ridiculous for law abiding business owners to comply with. If I were a scum lawyer I would just tear off the fee the notices and file the suit - why wouldn't I?
