Volkswagen has transformed a 2013 Volkswagen Beetle convertible car into a shark cage as part of its sponsorship of the Discovery Channel's Shark Week, which begins tomorrow. The Beetle shark cage will be driven by marine biologist Luke Tipple in a "subaquatic road trip." The shark cage in the shape of the iconic car can actually be propelled and steered underwater, allowing Tipple to not only drive on the ocean floor, but to drive at various depths in the water, rising all the way to the surface, similar to a submarine.
The 2013 Volkswagen Beetle convertible is available in eight different trim levels. Starting at $24,995, the base model features a 2.5-liter, in-line, five-cylinder engine that gets 21 city/27 highway mpg, according to Environmental Protection Agency estimates.
