You might think having sharks swimming around a Volkswagen Beetle would be a big "uh-oh" that results in a major increase in car insurance rates, but in this case, being shark bait was this Beetle's destiny.
In celebration of the Discovery Channel's 25th annual Shark Week, Volkswagen teamed with shark expert and diver Luke Tipple to create a Volkswagen Beetle Shark Observation Cage that literally puts viewers in the driver's seat as it literally cruises along the ocean floor. The design is based on a 2012 Volkswagen Beetle and features a cage in the shape of the iconic car as well as a driver's seat, steering wheel and wheels so it can be "driven" underwater. During Shark Week, three ad segments, each one-minute long, showed the design and construction of the Beetle shark cage, as well as the work it took to submerge it at the bottom of the ocean. These segments, as well as additional video footage, were shown on Volkswagen's YouTube channel.
