Let's be honest, it's hard for many of us to wrap our arms around Bitcoin.

In fact, "What is Bitcoin" was the 10th most popular Google "what is" search in 2013, according to Google Trends.

Nos. 1 and 2 on the list were "What is twerking" and "What is Ricin," respectively. (For the record, Ricin is a poison made famous in 2013 by the TV show "Breaking Bad" and when letters laced with Ricin were mailed to President Barack Obama. As far as the definition of twerking ... look it up yourself.)

Here's the top 10 list of most-searched "What is" queries on Google:
1. What is twerking
2. What is Ricin
3. What is DOMA
4. What is Molly
5. What is gluten
6. What is sequestration
7. What is Obamacare
8. What is Lupus
9. What is Snapchat
10. What is Bitcoin

There have been quite a few news articles in recent months about Bitcoin and other virtual currencies, including the surprising popularity of Dogecoin, which started out as a joke of combining Bitcoin and the Doge meme.

But understanding exactly what Bitcoin is and where it's going is not easy.

Even technology and financial policy experts are having trouble with it. Some contend it could revolutionize currency and payments. Others question whether it can even be called a currency and is actually more of a commodity.

As Bank Innovation noted in a post last month, the hype around Bitcoin must be kept in perspective. To date, only a very small segment of the population has any bitcoins or other altcoins.

Still, its popularity in searches shows that people are interested in learning more about Bitcoin. For instance, the term "Bitcoin" was searched for this year more often than "mobile banking," according to Google's data.
