What are dealer incentives?

The Bankrate.com financial term of the day is: "dealer incentives."

When automakers have too many unsold vehicles in general, or if sales of certain models are disappointing, the companies may offer their dealers rebates or other dealer incentives to help move the merchandise. The dealers may opt to pass their savings on to you, the buyer.

Thanks to dealer incentives, a car dealer may be able to sweeten a car deal.
