New for '09: Chevrolet ZR1 Corvette
Chevrolet ZR1 Corvette | | | | | | As if the standard Corvette -- 430 horsepower -- or the 505-horsepower Z07 Corvette isn't enough, for 2009 Chevrolet rolls out the most powerful Vette ever. Reviving the ZR1 name, the new model makes 638 horsepower from a supercharged V-8 and has a top speed of at least 205 mph. It differs from a standard Corvette in widespread use of exotic materials, including carbon fiber and a dab of special paint here and there that costs $60,000 a gallon. It's priced at $105,000, including a $1,700 gas-guzzler tax because of its estimated fuel mileage of 14 mpg city, 20 mpg highway. Chevrolet only plans to make about 2,000 of these Corvettes a year, and already dealers are tacking on huge premiums for the privilege of owning one of the first ZR1s. As awesome as the ZR1 appears to be, it's hard to justify the cost, which is more than twice the price of a base Corvette, which is a performance icon in its own right. | | |
