Rates on loans backed by home equity increased slightly this week, according to Bankrate's latest survey of interest rates.

The typical home equity loan rose 2 basis points to 6.17 percent. A basis point is one-hundredth of 1 percent.

The typical home equity line of credit, or HELOC, rose 2 basis points to 4.79 percent.

Potential decreases in home equity loan rates were offset by a change in the makeup of the survey group.
