Weekly update -- home equity rates

Here's a look at the state of interest rates on five common consumer banking products and the latest rates from Bankrate.com's weekly national survey of large banks and thrifts conducted Jan. 21, 2009.

Home Equity

Rate: 5.2 percent (line of credit); 8.4 percent (loan)

Rates on home equity products shot up this week.

The average home equity line of credit, or HELOC, increased by 13 basis points to 5.2 percent. Meanwhile, home equity loan rates soared 14 basis points, to 8.4 percent. That's the highest rate since November 2001.
