Fall and winter clothes

Want to get a discount on seasonal clothes? September is the month you're likely to see the first price cuts on some of the new fall and winter fashions, says Daniel Butler, vice president of merchandising and retail operations for the National Retail Federation.

There won't be huge discounts, and there won't be deals on everything. But shoppers are likely to see some specials with 20 percent to 25 percent off certain fall and winter clothes and accessories -- including shoes, Butler says. Retailers do it to draw attention to the new stuff.

A related item you may not expect: denim.

"It's a seasonal change, and they've gone from denims for spring and summer to denims for winter," says Hillary Mendelsohn, author of "thepurplebook" series of shopping guides and founder of ThePurpleBook.com "So all that stuff is on sale in September."

While some experts estimate discounts between 20 percent and 25 percent, others believe careful shoppers will find deals of 25 percent to 50 percent off.
