National credit card rate averages

Here's a look at the state of interest rates on five common consumer banking products and the latest rates from Bankrate.com's weekly national survey of large banks and thrifts conducted Aug. 12, 2009.

Credit Cards

Rates: 13.46 percent (standard fixed); 11.16 percent (standard variable)

Average credit card interest rates remained unchanged from last week. Fixed-rate cards stayed at 12.38 percent and variable-rate cards stuck to 11.2 percent. Standard fixed rates kept to 13.46 percent and standard variable rates remained at 11.16 percent.

Revolving credit, a category of debt composed mostly of credit cards, fell for the ­­third consecutive quarter, according to the latest Federal Reserve Consumer Credit survey. Americans reduced their revolving debt by $5.3 billion in June to a new total of $917 billion. Revolving debt has declined by about $10 billion since April.
