Card debt hinders savings

If you have credit card debt, a new survey indicates that you have difficult time saving money. I’m Kristin Arnold with your Bankrate.com Personal Finance Minute.

According to a survey by America Saves and Experian, about two-thirds of Americans with credit card debt reported having difficulty saving a portion of their paycheck. Another 63 percent survey with payday, car title or pawnshop loans also reported savings trouble.

The survey respondents said they would need to use a credit card to pay for a $1000 car repair.

Having an emergency fund can help take the stress out of unexpected expenses. In fact, it’s a good idea to keep a small emergency fund even when paying down credit card debt. A Bankrate Financial Security Index from February 23 rd of this year indicated that 23 percent of Americans said they had more credit card debt than emergency savings.

Life rarely goes as planned…so starting and growing savings is vital to getting and maintaining a healthy financial life.
