Founded in the Netherlands, ING began operating under its former name in 1991 when Nationale-Nederlanden and NMB Postbank Group merged. ING entered the U.S. banking market in 2000 with ING Direct.
In 2012, Capital One acquired ING Direct. And in 2013, ING Direct was rebranded as Capital One 360.
Capital One 360 relies primarily on Internet banking. But while the bank is founded on using Web-based banking, it does have 11 regional “cafe” locations where customers can browse the Internet and talk to representatives about different account options. The cafes are located in Boston; Brookline, Massachusetts; Cambridge, Massachusetts; Chicago; Los Angeles; New York; Philadelphia; San Francisco; and St. Cloud, Minnesota. The bank also provides free access to more than 38,000 ATMs throughout the country.
A member of the FDIC and headquartered in Delaware, Capital One 360 offers a variety of personal banking services.
While many big banks now offer paperless checking and online bill payments, ING Direct was one of the first banks to unveil an eco-friendly and low-cost alternative to traditional checking accounts with its Electric Orange. Capital One 360 has continued this service for its customers. Customers can pay bills, send a paper or electronic check and transfer money securely online.
Capital One 360’s electronic banking model comes with savings and checking accounts that carry no hidden fees or minimums, same as the former ING Direct. And the bank provides competitive rates on its products. Even checking account customers can benefit from competitive yields.
