The holiday season can be a great time to shop for a car, in part because many dealers offer tasty incentives to move this year's models and make room for the next. But don't let a dealer spoil your end-of-the-year bargain by tacking on dealer fees.
Dealers love to add extra items to the final price tag of a car to eek out as much profit as possible on your new-car purchase. You may see fees with names like "vehicle preparation fee" that dealers charge for unpacking a car sent from the factory. That may seem reasonable at first blush, but would you pay an "iPad preparation fee" at Best Buy? Probably not.
So-called "documentation fees" can be a little sketchy, also. While you'll definitely need to pay fees assessed by state and local governments, dealers sometimes try to sneak in extra fees in this category.
But regardless of what a fee is called, just remember that if it's added by a dealer, it's negotiable. And if you're not happy with a fee, feel free to jingle all the way to the next dealership.
