The five-passenger Kia Sportage is one of the least expensive crossover vehicles on the market. The Sportage received a mild redesign for 2009, including fresh look on its front end and new taillights, so there are no further changes for 2010. Owners get two engine choices: a 140-horsepower, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder or a 173-horsepower, 2.7-liter V-6. Front-wheel drive is standard, while full-time, four-wheel-drive is available. Go »
Jeep PatriotStarting MSRP: about $17,500

In keeping with Jeep's off-road tradition, the inexpensive Patriot comes in front-wheel drive as well as two different four-wheel-drive systems. The top-of-the-line system is "Trail-Rated," meaning it meets Jeep's off-road driving requirements for driving through water and rock crawling. For 2009, there were changes to the suspension, improved sound deadening, as well as a redesigned instrument panel and center console to make the interior more driver-friendly. No further changes are planned for 2010. Go »
Hyundai TucsonStarting MSRP: about $18,000

Sibling to the Kia Sportage, the Hyundai Tucson also received a redesigned front and rear end for 2009, as well as reprogramming of the transmission and torque converter to improve fuel economy. The five-seater compact crossover is powered by a 140-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder on base models, while a 173-horsepower, 2.7-liter V-6 is available on the two upper trim levels. Both engines are available with either front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive. Go »
