Save money on European travel

European travel isn't cheap, with prices on international flights higher than last year and room rates in Paris, London and Rome on the rise. This is Lucas Wysocki with the Bankrate.com Personal Finance Minute.

If you're looking for cheaper airfare to Europe, try flying on a Tuesday or Wednesday, or take the early morning or red-eye flights. You might save by booking one-way tickets on two different airlines than round-trip tickets on the same airline. And book sooner than later. For cheaper lodging, look to peer-to-peer rental or home-swapping sites, or hostels instead of hotels.

If popular cities and countries are too pricey, try places like Poland, Hungary, Romania or Slovakia, or countries having economic woes such as Spain, Ireland, Greece or Iceland. While food and sightseeing are big draws for travelers, there are deals to be had. Many cities offer discounts if you buy a pass to multiple attractions. There are also free events, like concerts, and inexpensive street food to replace restaurant meals.
