Could you use an extra $2,000? Find out how by practicing these simple steps.

I'm Kristin Arnold with your Bankrate.com Personal Finance Minute.

Get free text messaging apps, such as textPlus or Kik. Making the switch can save you money and help downsize your phone bill.

Sell your unused gift cards. Find a gift card exchange website and sell the cards you won't use to other buyers.

Pay attention when grocery items are on sale. Most supermarkets have sales in 12 week cycles. Stock up on items when they're on sale, saving you big bucks.

Freeze your gym membership during the summer months when you can exercise outside.

If possible, increase your insurance deductibles. If you've built up enough savings and can get a higher deductible, you can save on your premium cost.

Consider ditching your cable subscription, and watch TV shows on online streaming services or on-demand.

You can also save money by asking for discounted rates when shopping for telephone and internet services. Asking for promotional prices on services you already use can also save you money on your bills.
