Most embarrassing money moves

"Both banks actually thought it was a fairly humorous story and, believe it or not, got it all corrected and even wrote a letter of explanation to those unfortunates who had received one of my "overdrawn" checks. My bank credited all the overdrawn charges back and handled things most graciously. I wonder how that same transaction might be handled today."

French date
"After a long and wine-heavy lunch in the French countryside, while my wife and I were traveling with another couple, my friend and I cheerfully pulled out our wads of French francs and paid the big number at the bottom of the bill.

"We were staggering out of the place when the owner came running after us, waving our money and shouting something in French. We were most apologetic and pulled out our wallets to pay the rest of the bill when he started shoving money back at us. After a few moments my French-speaking wife finally deciphered the problem: We had paid the date. The actual bill was about a third of what we had left."

Stamp of disapproval
"Like most other folks, I get many mail solicitations for charity. I do give to some, but mostly my church, and toss the rest. One particular solicitation was from Help the Children in which they included a stamped envelope to return your donation. One night while paying bills, I ran out of stamps and eyeballed this stamped envelope from Help the Children. After a few minor modifications to the envelope and a little Wite-Out, that envelope was ready to send my power bill.

"After a month went by, I got a notice from the power company saying that I was late on my bill. My checkbook ledger said that I had paid, but nonetheless I wrote another check. A couple of days later, my wife presented me with a small plastic bag with a 'return to sender' sticker on it and inside was a shredded Help-the-Children envelope and personal check with a letter basically stating that I was an immoral person to do such a thing. What made it worse is that I'm always reminding my wife of how lucky she is to have found such an honest husband full of integrity!"
