Consider what you need

First, decide if your current job can be salvaged. Is it really too terrible to continue, or can you improve your situation?

Rather than complaining to friends and co-workers about how miserable you are, sit down and make a list of what you like and don't like about your job. Then you have concrete statements that you can deal with.

Think about things like salary, atmosphere, co-workers, benefits, fulfillment you get from your work and room for advancement.

Examine your list. Is the main problem a low salary? Then you need to ask for a raise. Not fulfilling enough? Consider a creative approach to your job. Need a promotion? A career coach could help you get one.

If you just can't continue in your current job, or just want to have more options, it's time to start looking.
