135 places for low-income taxpayers to turn
for help
By Kay Bell Bankrate.com
Since 1999, the Internal Revenue Service
has awarded federal
grants to groups that sponsor clinics to help low-income individuals
resolve tax disputes. Volunteers at the clinics generally provide
free help for taxpayers trying to resolve disputes with the IRS. There
may be a nominal charge for associated costs, such as document copying
or court filing fees.
In 2004, federal funds were awared to 135 organizations
to help run taxpayer clinics in 49 states, the District of Columbia
and Puerto Rico. That's three fewer clinics than last year, but
the program expanded to another state this year. Only Wyoming has
no IRS-funded tax clinics.
The clinics are listed below by state, sponsoring
organization and city. Many of these same organizations are expected
to be among those that can help eligible filers with their taxes
this year. The IRS is expected to announce the latest list by mid-March.
In the meantime, for specific clinic locations or other help, contact
the local
IRS office nearest you.
